Know-how / Specialty

Specialized in kimonos since 1951, atelier Omiya created textile brand Sanjiku in 2012. Their signature textile is produced on large circular looms, a machine that exists today in only two examples in Kyoto. Giants with gentle gestures, these five-meter diameter looms, covered in hundreds of pins, require the constant care of surrounding artisans. The three-thread silk structure they produce, in a caned motif, produces strength, softness and lightness.
But what really distinguished Sanjiku would have to be the subtle gradients that give the impression of dip-dyed, rather than woven, materials. This weaving method was inspired directly by ancestral Japanese plaiting, Kyokumihimo, and bobbin lace ''au torchon,'' first practiced in Italy. From design to product, including the creation of the patterning cards, every step is done in-house.
